Bundeena

Bundeena is in the Royal National Park in Sydney's South.
Bundeena takes its name from an Aboriginal word meaning " noise like thunder" and has a distinct history. There are some Aboriginal carvings on Jibbon Point. We can take a relaxing stroll on the idyllic sandy beaches and visit one of the numerous fishing spots among the coast.

On the first Saturday of every month in the wonderful seaside town of Bundeea, you can see live pottery demonstrations by local artists.

We can take a regular train to Cronulla and then it's just a short walk to the Bundeena ferry. The ferry starts at 5:30 in the morning on weekdays and sets off to Bundeena every hour.

ANZAC Day

There is a very special day each year on 25th April, it is ANZAC Day. ANZAC stand for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps.
Australia was drawn into First World War, Second World War and Vietnam War. Simpson and his donkey called Duffy are famous heroes from the First World War. Simpson put wounded soldiers on the donkey’s back and helped them to the first aid tent.
“Defend” means “to keep safe” and the people in the Australian Defence Force keep our country safe and protect us. And the Australian soldiers called Diggers.
On ANZAC Day, we remember the brave men and women who have served our country in times of war, we show our thanks to the people who have fought for our country. We can wear ANZAC badges and wave Australian flags to show how proud we are. On ANZAC Day flowers and wreaths of red poppies are laid at the bottom of war memorials as a way of saying we have remembered these brave people.
The Ode is part of a special poem that is said during the ANZAC Day service. Here are the words:
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morningWe will remember them.
And we say "Lest We Forget" in reply to the Ode.

The Hui An women

Today our topic is the gender roles. I think maybe their have some difficult in doing some specific job, but all the job can be done both by men and women.
In the southeast beach of China, there is somewhere called Hui An. They aren't minority but they have very special custom.
In Hui An, most of men go out for fishing or working, only the women stay at home. So women can do all the work, even the manual work. They carrying heavy stone, building the house, fixing the fishing net and other things. If the men come back, they usually carrying the babies, cave or do some business.
The Hui An women wear very special clothers. Colorful muffle, short coat, loose-fitting trousers, silver belt. You may see the women's navel but you can't see their ear.
When they married, the women just stay at their husband's home for 3 days and then go back. At the festival, men can take their wife back home for one or two days, until they have baby then women can live with their husband.

The Harmony Day

I saw the video about the ESL students & teachers celebrate Harmony Day at St George TAFE Sydney. On the 19th March 2009, some of my classmates attended the celebration. It was very interesting.
Some students sang songs from their countries, some of the students talked about their experience in Australia, one of chinese student play a beautiful melody with chinese traditional instrument called Zheng. All of them stood up and sang the national anthem. I also heard a beautiful song that Jenny had taught us last year "We are Austalian". I like this song. We are one, but we are many, and from all the lands on earth we come. We share a dream and sing with one voice: I am, you are, we are Australian.

A legend of Nian

In the ancient periods, there was a monster called Nian. It usual came out at the Chinese New Year's Eve and ate people and animals. So when the New Year's Eve was coming, people all hidden in the moutains.
One year, there was an old men came and said he would banished the Nian from here. When Nian was caming, it saw there were red paper stick on the wall and light in the room, when it approach, it heard a sound of bomb. Nian was scared and ran away. Then all the people knew that Nian was afraid of red, light and sound.
So every year in China, at the New Year's Eve, people all stick red Spring Festival couplets on the wall, lit the light the whole night, and set off firecrackers.

Christmas Day

My husband and I went to Bondi Beach at Christmas Day. Bondi Beach is one of the most famous beach in Australia, a lot of visitors come to the Beach from all over the world.
We drove there at about 10 o'clock in the morning, and spend ten minuets to found a place to park. Then we went to visit a friend of my husband. He manage a shop near the beach. It was busy in the shop that time, so we left to the beach. We just walked along the beach and enjoy the happy time, because I can't swim. But we took some photos and ate a sweet corn, very delicious!
After the lunch, we went to La perous. It was windy . And I saw some people fishing there. There is a bridge lead to a little island. In the "Mission: Impossible 2", one of the scene was took there. Because of the wind and water, the rock there was very peculiar and beautiful.
There is beach culture in Australia. I like beach. I want to learn swim and one day I can swim in the beach.
