In the ancient periods, there was a monster called Nian. It usual came out at the Chinese New Year's Eve and ate people and animals. So when the New Year's Eve was coming, people all hidden in the moutains.
One year, there was an old men came and said he would banished the Nian from here. When Nian was caming, it saw there were red paper stick on the wall and light in the room, when it approach, it heard a sound of bomb. Nian was scared and ran away. Then all the people knew that Nian was afraid of red, light and sound.
So every year in China, at the New Year's Eve, people all stick red Spring Festival couplets on the wall, lit the light the whole night, and set off firecrackers.
